2018 Farm Family of the Year
We (Bob & Karla Beying) started our farm at Easton when we were married 51 years ago. In the beginning, we had some row crop and a small herd of crossbred cows. We later diversified and added a farrow to finish hog operation.
In 1988, we made a family decision to expand the cowherd and raise registered Gelbvieh seedstock and market Gelbvieh bulls and females. At that time we liquidated the hog operation and sowed our cropland into grass and hay and have spent the last 30 years following our passion, Gelbvieh cattle.
Our two sons, Tim and Brian, and their wives Kris and Julie, own and raise cattle with us, making up Dawson Creek Gelbvieh. Our four grandsons, Seth, Logan, Luke, and Cooper have joined our operation and regularly participate in cattle shows ranging from the Leavenworth County Fair, to state and regional Junior shows, to the National Gelbvieh Show in Denver, and the National Gelbvieh Jr. Show.
Over the years, we have been greatly involved in various county and state agricultural associations. Bob was a 35 year veteran and past president of the Leavenworth County Fair Board. We were founding members of the Stranger Creek 4H Club here in Leavenworth County. We have been members of the American Gelbvieh Association and the Kansas Gelbvieh Association since 1988. Bob, Tim, and Brian have each served on the Kansas Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors and Bob has served as a past president of that association. In 2016, we were honored as the KGA Family of the Year by the Kansas Gelbvieh Association.
We are proud of the kids, grandkids, and Gelbvieh cattle we have raised here on Great Grandpa Beying’s farm for fifty years. We feel blessed to remain on the family farm, and in 2010, we were honored to have the farm recognized as a Century Farm by Farm Bureau.
Currently our operation consists of 100 head of Gelbvieh and Balancer cows. We use artificial insemination and embryo transfer extensively in order to provide bulls and females that will meet the needs of our customers. These days we spend most of our time putting up hay, working cattle, attending our grandsons’ sporting and cattle events, and participating in church activities at St. Lawrence Church in Easton, where we have been members for our entire married lives.
